India has the capacity to produce enough spices to supply to the world market six times over, they stressed. From the macro economic viewpoint, this would mean that as the cost of spice production increase around the world , India, with her strong domestic base would be the one most likely to ride-out the storm to subsequently be in a position to benefit from the shortage. The spice industry is here to stay, unlike situation in many other exporting countries. They might cut back on their capacity or even switch to alternative cash crops offering better profits. Buyers of Indian specialty spices can be assured of a regular supply at competitive prices. ![]() | ||||

"Indian spice exports are on track to beat last year's performance and have the potential to set a new recent record even though pepper shipments have suffered a massive year over year decline. During the 2000-01 marketing year set a record as the 28,850 metric tons (MT) shipped in March pulled the season total to 230,000 MT. The pulled export sales 10% above last season and just ahead of the previous high of 228,821 MT set during the 1997-98 sales campaign. The season's experience surprised the industry because of faltering pepper exports. Shipments of the spice plunged to a recent low of just 19,250 MT, a dramatic reduction from the previous season's 42,100 MT. The only other spice to record a loss in sales volume was ginger, which slipped from 7,800 MT to 6,580 MT. Most of the losses in pepper exports were offset by gains in the other spices category. Covering tamarind, asafetida, cinnamon, cassia, kokum, saffron and other minor spice, shipments more than doubled to 35,000 MT. Strong gains were also posted by cumin, with shipments tripling from last year's 4,250MT to 13,800. "

"Demand for spices will continue to increase in the future. The volume produced will also go up. Our concern is to ensure that our market share does not fall. Competition is stiff and everyone is eager to have a bigger share of the business. We have to defend our position by improving the quality of the products we can offer" INDIAN CARDAMOM 2000-01*Click* Spice Oil & Oleoresin Exports -India
